Some notes on Passive vs. Active:
Passive basses/guitars will have the pickups going to the volume and balance/tone knobs to the output. So you are just getting the tone from the pickups.
Active basses/guitars will have a preamp in between the pickups and the knobs. This will give you more tone control because you now have mid control. It generally gives you a hi-fi sort of sound. It also adds about 15db to the signal, so that is why there are 2 inputs on most bass amps. The first is passive the second input is for active basses it has a pad on the input dropping the input down 10-15db so the amp doesn't distort.
