Typical of much of Hawaiian history, there are several legends surrounding the origin of the word ukelele. An island word meaning jumpig flea, by most accounts it was initially used to describe the uke players fingers jumping like fleas over the fretboard. The Hawaiian word Lanikai is made up of two words- Lani which translates to heavenly and kai which means ocean.
