Dirk Powell Learn To Play Cajun Accordion - Vol.1
Dirk Powell is one of the most important young traditional musicians in the United States today. He is best known for his accordion work with Balfa Toujours, a group which is carrying on the Cajun traditions of Dirk's legendary father-in-law, Dewey Balfa. Dirk won first place at the annual Mulate's Accordion Contest in 1994 and has taught Cajun accordion across the U.S. and throughout Europe. He has been playing professionally since his teens and has recorded on more than twenty albums. Balfa Toujours' latest Rounder recording, "La Pointe," has been called "an unselfconscious explosion of creative energy" by Barry Ancelet, the premier authority on Cajun culture in Louisiana.
Level 1 Novice: No prior experience on your instrument is necessary. The instructor starts with the assumption that this is your very first lesson.
In the 75 minute DVD with booklet, Dirk teaches in a step-by-step approach that makes it easy to start playing Cajun music immediately. He begins with the basics -- how to hold the instrument, use the bellows, place your fingers on the keys, find the notes, and the important technique of playing in octaves (playing "double"), the essence of the Cajun style.
Starting with the simplest of melodies, Dirk gradually adds the Cajun "feel" through a variety of rhythmic techniques, "squeezing" notes, triplets and other effects. Adding the left hand chords (there are only two) completes the familiar sound, and by the time you've completed the first lesson you'll be able to play some of the most popular Cajun dance tunes: "La valse de quatre-vingt-dix-neuf ans" ("The 99 Year Waltz"), "The High Point Two-Step" and "Johnny Can't Dance." You will also get close-up footage of "The Ossun Two-Step" and "The Creole Stomp."
